Analyzing Amateur Baseball Talent as it pertains to the MLB Draft

Top 50 2010 Prospects

By now I'm sure you have heard the name Bryce Harper, who will sit atop this list possibly the entire time between now and the June draft. While his legend may be growing a little too far, too fast, his talent is legitimate, possessing two tools (his power and his arm strength) that rank a perfect 80 on the 20-to-80 scouting scale. That alone garners him the top spot.

Pitching falls in place after Harper, led by prep pitchers Jameson Taillon, A.J. Cole, Karsten Whitson and DeAndre Smelter as well as college hurlers Anthony Ranaudo, Chris Sale, Drew Pomeranz, Alex Wimmers, Jesse Hahn, Brandon Workman, Kyle Blair, Justin Grimm, Sammy Solis, Kevin Jacob and Deck McGuire.

Both sides are complemented by the two-way promise of prepsters Stetson Allie, Kaleb Cowart, Yordy Cabrera and Justin O'Conner, and college players Bryce Brentz and Brett Eibner. Allie, Cowart and Eibner probably profile better on the mound, while Cabrera, O'Conner and Brentz will likely progress due to their bats.

For the second consecutive year, impact bats are a little hard to come by, but there is some promise in college infielders such as Christian Colon, Zack Cox, Rick Hague, Hunter Morris and Derek Dietrich as well as high school infielders Cabrera, O'Conner, Cowart, Nick Castellanos, Kris Bryant and Tony Wolters.

After seeing a great year for prep catching a year ago, that same class is especially thin this year, while the college crop offers a quartet of catchers that could go in the first round including juco star Bryce Harper as well as Micah Gibbs, Yasmani Grandal and Robert Brantly.

The prep class offers more promise among the available outfielders than the college class, although most of the top draft eligible players, such as Brian Ragira, Chevez Clarke, Austin Wilson and Reggie Golden, are known more for their potential than they are their current polish.
