Analyzing Amateur Baseball Talent as it pertains to the MLB Draft

Breakthrough Series
Notes from 7-29-10

The Breakthrough Series championship game was held on July 29, 2010 in Durham, North Carolina. While the players were wearing Team USA uniforms, these teams weren’t to be confused with the 18U club that went 19-2 this summer. That said, there was some solid talent on hand.

Deion Williams

Williams also participated in the Under Armour Classic, where I covered him in greater detail. He is really lanky although has room for added growth and strength. There is some nice wiry strength currently in his legs. He uses a slightly closed stance and hit singles in his first two at-bats, swinging down on the ball to smack line drives through the infield and get on base with his speed.

Blake Hickman

Hickman had good size and very good bat speed. His chest is flat right now, but he has sloped shoulders and a strong lower half. There is a natural uppercut to his swing and put a charge in one ball belting a double off of the base of the wall in left-center in the fifth.

Mikal Hill

Hill is a shorter yet stocky sparkplug type of athlete. He is very active and energetic. He has a defined upper body and sloped shoulders, reminding me of former big-league middle infielder Eric Young, although Hill is taller than Young. He showed a good approach and bat speed and had plus speed down the first base line. He is quick to the ball with a compact swing, and seems like the type of player that makes things happen both at the plate and on the field. Hill has committed to play for South Carolina.

Leland Clemmons

Clemmons is a little guy, very skinny that needs to find a way to add some strength to his small stature. He has competed with and against the best players in the nation, so it’s not like he was here by mistake. He is a quick, fast-twitch athlete with sloped shoulders and a crouched stance. There is an uppercut to his swing and he can take some big hacks, as he will need to tone that down if that is his usual approach. He would be better off leveling out his swing (like Williams) to take advantage of his speed. He did show a big arm at the Perfect Game National in mid-June. Clemmons has committed to NC-Charlotte.

BeShon Kimbell

Kimbell was an impressive athlete, with a chiseled, developed physique and defined upper half. He has sloped shoulders and a well-proportioned lower half as well. His upright batting stance and body type reminded me of George Springer, who tore things up this summer on the Cape and with the Collegiate National Team USA squad. Kimbell shows good bat speed and puts a nice charge in the ball.

Alex Santana

Santana has an excellent athletic frame with very good proportions and is tapered through the waist. With sloped shoulders, long legs and a high waist, he has the look of someone like Alex Rodriguez, with plenty of room to get bigger and stronger without losing his natural quickness and speed. He shows strong hands and wrists and good bat speed. He hit a breaking ball up the middle in the first, showing the ability to pull his hands in and stay with the pitch. Santana has been impressive this summer at other notable showcase events as well. Santana has given his college commitment to Florida Atlantic.
