The draft is a week away, and word is still slow to travel out of the scouting community as teams seems to be playing their cards closer to the chest this year as money continues to become a bigger and bigger part of who is taken where.
Drew Pomeranz will have the biggest impact towards the top of the draft, who rebounded well in the SEC tournament after some concerns about his arm, showing his usual 90-94 fastball and hard-to-hit knuckle curve.
The Pirates and Orioles are believed to be prepared to spend slot value at the top of the draft after taking bargain picks a year ago, but slot value may only mean they're prepared to sign a player quickly to the MLB commissioner's office recommended value then dealing with the headache of negotiating up until the mid-August signing deadline.
Anthony Ranaudo also looked good in the SEC tournament, although you have to wonder if it may have been too little too late, as his affiliation to Scott Boras means that he will likely be looking for top dollar to sign no matter where he's selected.
Pitching remains to be the premium, but don't be surprised to see a run on bats early. Bryce Harper won't technically be among those bats, as he remains the favorite to go first overall. The Nationals look as though they picked a fine time to have back-to-back first overall picks given how special both Stephen Strasburg and Harper appear to be, and should Harper remain behind the plate, they would form the most hyped battery in the history of the sport.
